The Being of the Arts
Translated by Reg Down
$8.95Add a review
For those interested in the spiritual aspects of the arts Reg Down has translated Rudolf Steiner's "The Being of the Arts."
In what was announced as a lecture Steiner instead began to tell an extraordinary tale. It begins with two women standing in a stark and frozen landscape: one experiences the bitter cold, the other the extraordinary beauty. Both fall asleep, but while one falls into a sleep on the verge of death, the other is approached out of the sunset by a youth who says: ‘You are art’. She then undergoes a powerful set of experiences. Today we might call them vivid dreams, but that would be too passive. They are more than dreams; she performs deeds and becomes the bearer of mighty, creative impulses for the future.
This tale, told in 1909, has lost none of its originality and vividness. It is as relevant and powerful as when it was first told. It presents the reader with a series of images and beings drawn directly from the spiritual world, but in such a way that, through art, a bridge is built between the spiritual and earthly worlds.
This edition is freshly translated by Reg Down, with a foreword and end notes containing illustrations and photographs of subjects and works of art mentioned in the course of the tale.
Drawing with Hand, Head, and Heart
A Natural Approach to Learning the Art of Drawing
Hundreds of full-color and black-and-white illustrations

This beautiful book is so packed with the richness of life and a zest for beauty that the fact that it is also the best guide to learning how to draw and teaching children to draw that I've ever seen comes almost as a surprising bonus. As you feast your eyes on one delightful, beautiful drawing after another, you can't help but be inspired to try your own hand at drawing, and to pass along what you learn. But, remarkably, this is only part of the genius of Drawing with Hand, Head, and Heart.
Drawing with Hand, Head, and Heart is a comprehensive and practical guide to the art of drawing and to the process of visual thinking that is part of our full human intelligence. More than 500 illustrated exercises and examples—collected and developed over many years of Waldorf classroom experience—show teachers, parents, and students how to learn to draw simply and naturally, as a child would learn to draw.
The introduction examines contemporary research on brain development and its relationship to learning, showing how the process of picture making contributes to the development of visual thinking. An overview follows about how children learn to draw and how their visual intelligence can be engaged through age-appropriate drawing exercises. Many useful examples of form drawing, portraiture, and geometric and perspective drawing illustrate the art and science of drawing for students of all ages and ability levels.
Van James also provides samples of inspiring blackboard drawings and main lesson book pages for teachers and students and includes an informative appendix on therapeutic drawing, a bibliography of resources, and an index. Includes 576 color and black and white illustrations.

“What is postulated here is not the dogmatic laying down of a way of working. Rather the aim is to make evident one possible means of access to an experience of the color world ... and guide actual practice to Rudolf Steiner’s sketch motifs—to their eminent educational power—for we recognize in them a path that can become of great significance to the developing human soul.” (from the introduction)
This unique workbook describes the early stages of training for painters, teachers, as well as for beginners. The stages are based on recommendations by Rudolf Steiner for the development of a renewed art of painting for our time. The book draws on Steiner’s indications for teaching painting in the first Waldorf school, his lectures on color and art, and sketches he made for painters. Together, they form a self-contained system of exercises for a new, spiritually alive art.

Workbook for watercolour painting and colour therapy

Way back in the day, when our own children were first embarking on their Waldorf journey, I longed to be able to learn how to use watercolor paints and discover the wonders of color itself through them. Unfortunately for me, there was no possibility of my taking time out from our home and children to attend art classes and absolutely nothing was in print that could serve as a tutor at home. From what we've heard over the years, many of you have felt the same way -- and those of you who've written to ask know how reluctantly we've answered that what they are looking for really didn't exist.
It is with both relief and joy that we can announce the arrival of Colour Dynamics, the first really complete, beautifully and clearly illustrated, step-by-step workbook for discovering the life and mysteries of color on one's own. For me, it is a dream come true: a thorough tutorial that anyone can use as the foundation for a lifetime of color exploration through the medium of watercolor.
Of course, Colour Dynamics' usefulness extends well beyond parents at home: teachers and therapists will find it both refreshing and deepening; teenagers may well develop a passion for color through it, too. This book has truly raised the bar for artistic instruction as available through the printed page. Both the publisher and the author are due whatever accolades come their way as a result of this wonderful text.
In the case of this book, the journey of a thousand paintings can begin with a single stroke of your brush. It is wonderful!
Highly recommended for adults and teenagers.

Art as Spiritual Activity
Rudolf Steiner's Contribution to the Visual Arts
Edited and Introduced by Michael Howard
$24.95Add a review
It's hard to know where to focus my enthusiasm for this volume: whether to rest it upon Michael Howard's extensive introduction (over 100 pages) to the world of Rudolf Steiner's expression of the visual arts or upon the ten seminal lectures by Steiner himself, touching as they do upon everything from the nature of aesthetics to the specifics of painting, sculpture, architecture and more. Perhaps the best I can say is that if you've ever wondered or wanted to know more about the artistic impulse behind Anthroposophic art, this is the ideal place to begin your journey. It's hard for me to imagine anyone regretting it.

Lois Schroff's Physical and Spiritual Experiences of Color: Its Therapeutic and Artistic Aspects contains her further investigation into the mysterious realm of color and follows her earlier book, Color: Its Relationship to Soul and Spirit (2003). Since 1977, she has been teaching Liane Collot d'Herbois's veil painting method based on the color theories of Rudolf Steiner and J. W. von Goethe. She has also produced a DVD that demonstrates this technique, Spirit in Watercolor (1992).
The present book traces the author's path of inquiry and discovery in the realm of color, delving into the relationship of art, science, adn religion. She explores theories of color and the interactions of light, darkness and color. These explorations lead to a deepening understanding of the activity in the human soul and how color can be used therapeutically.
Schroff speaks to every human beingand also adds some guiding thoughts for artists. The book includes five of her watercolor paintings, numerous illustrations, and five appendices covering Goethe's prism exercies, the evolution of color perception, green and magenta as spirit and soul, visible elements and invisible ethers, and color intervals and tips for artists. An extensive bibliography encourages further research.
This is a beautiful culmination of Lois's work and artistic comprehension. Highly recommended!

When one thinks clearly about darkness, light and color, it is obvious that their existence is not dependent upon the physical. Darkness and light are primal spiritual phenomena, and the world of color and soul are the result of their interaction."
- Lois Schroff
Lois Schroff has done something that many of us have been hoping someone would do - she has put a class in watercolor veil painting on video so that all those who long for a painting class but do not have a way to attend one can learn this healing and enlivening technique.
This video is the perfect companion to Schroff's book, which contains detailed descriptions and clear black & white photos of the veil painting process. Because painting is a fluid, moving activity, Spirit in Watercolor picks up the instruction where Color - Its Relationship to Soul and Spirit leaves off.
It is with joy and gratitude to Lois Schroff that we offer her video in our shop.
Color and Gesture
The Inner Life of Color
"Phonebook" length - with hundreds of line drawings by the author
$38.50Add a review
Reg Down's Color and Gesture is a monumental work that explores in depth and with beauty the inner life of color as expressed through eurythmy and Rudolf Steiner's spiritual vision. What appears is a world of incredible richness, depth and beauty in the most common, unlikely and unexpected of places: that of gesture. Gesture reveals the human soul, and the fabric of the soul is color; as a result, we find that the souls' infinite expressiveness, with all its goodness, pathos, waywardness and humor, is intimately woven through with color experiences.
When we approach gesture via color, we discover whole gesture families, with, at times, the most unforeseen of bedfellows. We gain new insights into soul gestures, acting gestures, animal, planetary and zodiac gestures. The underlying eurythmic gestures of speech and music are also explored, and we learn to expreience how the color chords and underlying gesure are themselves a structured, musically-ordered language.
When we approach color via gesture, we find inner laws, relationships and dynamics that allow us to gain, via artistic activity, not only a deeper understanding of color as a whole, but also a conscious foothold in the astral and etheric worlds.
~ from the author's description with additions of my own - this is an amazing book!

Goethe & Palladio
Goethe's study of the relationship between art and nature, leading through architecture to the discovery of the metamorphosis of plants
David Lowe/Simon Sharp
$15.00Add a review
The poet, dramatist, novelist, and scientist, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had to wait many years before he was able to travel south to Italy, "the land where the lemon trees bloom." He had gained success in several fields, but he had a sense of being trapped and confined and felt a need for light. Italy would give this to him in a number of ways.
Taking as their basis Goethe’s Italian Journey, the authors of this fascinating and unusual study explore how Goethe’s experience of Palladio’s architecture influenced his view of the relationship between art and nature in general and, in particular, helped him form his understanding of metamorphosis, leading to his discovery of the “archetypal plant.”
In his carefully written account of his travels, Goethe seems to oscillate between experiences of architecture and experiences of nature. In nature, he searched for the "archetypal plant," the essential form whose metamorphosis through time would produce the plant we see in its cycle from seed to fruit. In the art and architecture of antiquity and in Palladio’s classical reformulation of it, he tried to understand the purpose and function of artistic creation.
Until now, no one has put these two together. David Lowe and Simon Sharp show for the first time how these seemingly unrelated subjects are related—how the living geometries and volumes of harmoniously proportioned buildings, the “great idea” of architecture, can lead to the intuition of similar principles in nature.
David Lowe and Simon Sharp have worked together for twenty-one years. One of their first projects was the recreation of Goethe’s Italian Journey. They have given numerous workshops and presentations on the subject in the U.S. and U.K., including The British Museum, the German Embassy, and the Edinburgh Festival.
This is must-reading for anyone interested in Goethe's ideas on plants and metamorphosis.

In these lectures, Steiner begins with Goethe's Theory of Color, and discusses how moral effect of color upon human beings. He focuses particularly on the effect of color on human feeling and upon the health and well-being of the observer. Steiner lays the foundation for a practical technique for working with color based on the distinction between "image" and "luster" colors. It is this technique that paved the way for a new direction in the visual arts. Colour is the most comprehensive compilation in English of Steiner's insights into the nature of color, painting and artistic creation. A truly seminal work that is also fascinating to read.
